Plain bearings are used for:
- carrying very heavy loads (up to several MN, when their diameter exceeds 1 m);
- to dampen shaft vibrations;
- at high rotational speeds and the possibility of obtaining liquid friction;
- if it is necessary to use split bearings (or bushings);
- when silent running of the bearing is required;
- when achieving very high assembly accuracy (necessary in the case of rolling bearings) is difficult;
- in small structures with very low loads, including precision mechanics devices.
Rolling bearings are used:
- when very low resistance to movement must be achieved during operation, especially during start-up;
- at variable shaft rotational speeds, because the friction coefficient of rolling bearings depends only slightly on the rotational speed;
- at high and very high rotational speeds;
- when stopping and starting the machine frequently, because in such operating conditions the sliding bearings wear out quickly;
- when high operational reliability and long-bearing durability are required;
- when, due to the dimensions of the machine body, it is necessary to use bearings with small longitudinal dimension
